Oshkosh Day six.

I had a bad day with the camera today. I was doing some experiments last night and for got to reset the camera to Tv and instead left it on Av. So a lot of my shots are slightly out of focus, because my shutter speed (important when shooting thing that are moving) was not set properly. When shoot aircraft from the ground, I shoot as about 400 on the shutter, this generally gives me a nice crisp photo, with some blur on the prop. But since I had the camera in Av (aperture priority) My shutter speed was all over the place.

As far as the photos that did turn out, it’s a mixed bag of props and jets, just like every other day at Oshkosh. But I hope you will particularly like the Lancaster photos. There are only two flying Lancasters in the world, so it is really exciting for me to be able to shoot one in the air.

Naturaly there was also a B-17 up (two actually) as well as a bunch of B-25s and One b-24

Of course the jets were not neglected, I got some almost not blurry shots of the Mig 15 and 17 flying together.

I have no Idea what this is

I have not neglected the props. Here is a Fairchild

And a Stearman

And a shot of the F4U starting up

Which leaves nothing but our Glamour shot

Oshkosh day five.

If yesterday was jet day. Today must be prop day. Although you can never get totally away from the jets, I did try to keep it to a minimum.

We will start with my personal favorite, the Globe Swift.

Call me sentimental, but I love the lines on this aircraft. Although if I owned one, I’m sure I would be to lazy to keep it polished.

How can you not love that big smiling grill on the front?

I also got a couple of shots of the Cessna crowd, a real nice 190

And a file looking 140

I also got what I think is a Taylorcraft, but I could be wrong.

I also got some interesting stuff on the ground. This very pretty Sikorski

And this Beaver.

I really think the beaver looks better on wheels than floats. I also got a couple of shots of whatever the hell this thing is.

I know I said that today was prop day, but it was also the only day the Blue Angles were flying, so I had to take some shots of them.

Which only leaves us with today’s Glamour Shot, which I sorry to say isn’t very glamorous. But it is a nifty angle.

Oshkosh Day four.

Written on day five. Jet day today. (Although at Oshkosh every day is jet day) Today was my day off, so I spent a lot of time wandering around doing nothing. I did take a lot of pictures and drink a lot of water. As jet days go, this one was a good one. We had two F-22 Raptors fly in and do a little demonstration.

It was all very loud and impressive.

I wish I had brought a video camera, because the vectored thrust on the raptor makes for some very nifty maneuvers.

In addition to the raptors, two A-10s flew in and I got to watch their landings.

The biggest jet to fly in was this monster:

Which is a C-5 or something or other.

On the civilian side, the Eclipse 500 was certified today, and the first production plane was flying around.

This was countered by the news that the Honda Jet is going into production and Honda is taking orders for their aircraft.

It wasn’t ALL jets today. As you will see with today’s Glamour Shot

Oshkosh Day three.

A bit longer of a day today, so I’m writing in the morning instead of prior to going to sleep. The gang and I scored VIP tickets to the screening of the movie “Flyboys” It was a held in the EAA museum with free drinks and little finger snackies. I met Bert Ratan, who was kind enough to sign my pilots license, and saw Bob Hoover, Dick Ratan, and Paul Allen. The movie was OK, it had some good flying scenes and an OK story line, but I expected a bit more focus on the love of flying.

Earlier in the day I was at the flight line for the warbirds airshow. If was a lot of P-51s flying around, with a couple of Yaks thrown in for variety.

I missed the Lancaster flying in, but I did get a drive by shot on our way to the flight line for the airshow.

We weren’t parked far from the VIP tent, so I got to see Harrison Ford drive past on his way in.

Sean Tucker also stopped by and was kind enough to pose for photos

The coolest thing during the warbirds airshow was the Heritage Flight. A formation with two P-51s, a P-38, and an F-16.

That was particularly cool for me, since I had never seen a P-38 in the air before.

Today’s Glamour Shot:

Oshkosh day two.

Second verse, same as the first… or how a stopped worrying about my feet and learned to love the pain. Much more walking today. I had the second shift at the booth, so I spent the first half of the day walking the show around the flight line. “

Aeroshell Square

” is the big space at show center that has all of the really big aircraft in it. Right now it holds the Globemaster, the B1, and a bunch of fighters that I’ll take pictures of tomorrow. This is also where all the airshow guys get to park.

One of the great things about the early day is that you get to watch the arrivals on the big runway. They have divided the long North/South runway in to three separate runways and tell landing pilots to “land passed the blue dot” the blue dot is about half way down the runway, so you can have airplanes landing on the runway both in front of you and behind you. I also got to watch a Long –EZ bounce hard on landing.

A bit north of show center are the home builts. That’s is where I found this:

Which if you ask me, looks a lot like some one took a Long-EZ and said “OK now let’s make it ugly.”

I generally spend the most of my time on the south side of the show, in the vintage area. In the next few days I hope to get some good shots from this area, but it’s not as easy as I would like it to be. Unfortunately, no one is taking their airplanes up just so I can take pictures, and as you can see from the following shots, it gets crowded around here.

With people and airplanes.

Day two galmour shot:

Oshkosh day one.

My first full day at the show and is just as fun, big, and crowded as I remember. I was last here in 03, and I was doing the same thing I’m doing here now, which is demoing flight sim to the general public. The new version has been well received so far, but Oshkosh is kind of preaching to the choir.

One of the bad things about demoing, is that I missed some of the cooler arrivals. I missed the P-38 arrival this morning.

Although I did get to see the B1-B come in. It was very loud.

After my shift, I was free to walk around and look at airplanes, which I did to the detriment of my feet. Durring my stroll, Justin and I came across this monstrosity.

Yes, that is a turbine strapped to the nose of a Sukhoi.  No it was not attractive.

During a heat break, I go to watch the warbird arrival. That’s a lot of airplanes, flying very close to each other.

After the demo closed at 5:00, the gang got together for a bit as some storm clouds passed the airport to the north and east. We caught a bit of the edge and got a little wet, but nothing serious.

Then it was out and about, looking at airplanes.

Here is my daily glamour shot.

Made it.

I’m at Oshkosh, in a motel that is both super and eight. It’s right next to the airport but my room is facing the wrong way, so no watching airplanes land from my window. Met up with Hal and the gang and went a got dinner. I’m sharing a room with Jon Bach who like me, is a former FS team member. Tomorrow I take my first shift on booth duty in the morning, which is fine by me as I should get out in time to take some pictures in good light.

There should be a lot of aircraft flying in tomorrow, although the “north forty” is fairly full from the quick look I had at it earlier. I’m hoping to get some interesting aircraft flying in, I hear that there will be a good number of tiger moths at the show this year. I might even get a few photos of some very rare aircraft. I know that one of only two flying Lancaster bombers is flying in.

We’ll see what the day holds.

That’s Jon…My bed is the not clean one..
