Print & frame my art at Imagekind...

27 years, gone in one day.

In 1982, Microsoft first published Microsoft Flight Simulator. In 1996, I had the fantastic opportunity of join the Flight Sim team, where I was happy to work until I left in 2003. Yesterday, the news came that the entire Flight Sim team had been given their layoff notice, and the studio that made Flight Simulator was disbanded. Some good friends of mine have just lost their jobs, and a lot of Flight Sim fans, myself included, are wondering about the future of the longest continuously developed PC title in history. The status of the franchise in not clear right now, but by all appearances, (and I have no inside info here) Flight Simulator is dead. I have a lot of great Flight Sim memories, totally apart from working there. I learned how to intercept and track a VOR radial in Flight Sim long before I took my first flying lesion, and I still fly the Simulator when I can find the time.
Hopefully all my friends will find something that they are equally excited about as Flight Sim, and I know that any other team in MS (or outside of MS) would be lucky to have them.

Off to the races.

The Reno air races that is. In another fit of generosity, my former co-workers at Microsoft Flight Simulator have seen fit to invite me to work the show at their booth, where they and I will be demonstrating the “Acceleration” expansion pack.

Due to work and home commitments, I only get to be at the show for Friday and Saturday, with Thursday evening and Sunday reserved for travel. I’ve never been to the Reno Air Races before, so this is a fun opportunity for me to hone my skills at photographing things moving very fast. Like 500 miles an hour fast. It will also be my first opportunity to see the Canadian Air force Demonstration team, the Snowbirds. I am somewhat ashamed to say that after living relatively close to Abbotsford for over 20 years, I have never made it up there to see the Snowbirds. I will casually also mention that I have never seen the Thunderbirds either. Although I did go to an air-show where the Thunderbirds were scheduled to appear, the show was fogged out. Suck.

Photos will be forthcoming, as always.

Legos still rock

Thanks to Slashdot for the link to this post: An auto pilot made from Mindstorms NXT.

This is just super cool. It makes me want to drop a bunch of cash on Lego stuff. Yeah, that’s what I need, another hobby. I hope this guy will post a video when he get’s his system up and installed in an RC aircraft. It will be interesting to see how it works….or if it works.

Oshkosh Day three.

A bit longer of a day today, so I’m writing in the morning instead of prior to going to sleep. The gang and I scored VIP tickets to the screening of the movie “Flyboys” It was a held in the EAA museum with free drinks and little finger snackies. I met Bert Ratan, who was kind enough to sign my pilots license, and saw Bob Hoover, Dick Ratan, and Paul Allen. The movie was OK, it had some good flying scenes and an OK story line, but I expected a bit more focus on the love of flying.

Earlier in the day I was at the flight line for the warbirds airshow. If was a lot of P-51s flying around, with a couple of Yaks thrown in for variety.

I missed the Lancaster flying in, but I did get a drive by shot on our way to the flight line for the airshow.

We weren’t parked far from the VIP tent, so I got to see Harrison Ford drive past on his way in.

Sean Tucker also stopped by and was kind enough to pose for photos

The coolest thing during the warbirds airshow was the Heritage Flight. A formation with two P-51s, a P-38, and an F-16.

That was particularly cool for me, since I had never seen a P-38 in the air before.

Today’s Glamour Shot:

Oshkosh day one.

My first full day at the show and is just as fun, big, and crowded as I remember. I was last here in 03, and I was doing the same thing I’m doing here now, which is demoing flight sim to the general public. The new version has been well received so far, but Oshkosh is kind of preaching to the choir.

One of the bad things about demoing, is that I missed some of the cooler arrivals. I missed the P-38 arrival this morning.

Although I did get to see the B1-B come in. It was very loud.

After my shift, I was free to walk around and look at airplanes, which I did to the detriment of my feet. Durring my stroll, Justin and I came across this monstrosity.

Yes, that is a turbine strapped to the nose of a Sukhoi.  No it was not attractive.

During a heat break, I go to watch the warbird arrival. That’s a lot of airplanes, flying very close to each other.

After the demo closed at 5:00, the gang got together for a bit as some storm clouds passed the airport to the north and east. We caught a bit of the edge and got a little wet, but nothing serious.

Then it was out and about, looking at airplanes.

Here is my daily glamour shot.

Made it.

I’m at Oshkosh, in a motel that is both super and eight. It’s right next to the airport but my room is facing the wrong way, so no watching airplanes land from my window. Met up with Hal and the gang and went a got dinner. I’m sharing a room with Jon Bach who like me, is a former FS team member. Tomorrow I take my first shift on booth duty in the morning, which is fine by me as I should get out in time to take some pictures in good light.

There should be a lot of aircraft flying in tomorrow, although the “north forty” is fairly full from the quick look I had at it earlier. I’m hoping to get some interesting aircraft flying in, I hear that there will be a good number of tiger moths at the show this year. I might even get a few photos of some very rare aircraft. I know that one of only two flying Lancaster bombers is flying in.

We’ll see what the day holds.

That’s Jon…My bed is the not clean one..

New gallery up.

It’s official, I now have a new gallery up and running. And what a grand time it was. All in all I’m pleased with the results, it’s not matching the blog formatting, but it’s not ugly. I supposed if I really wanted, I could tweak it until it was a bit closer, but that looks like work.

In other news, I did attend the Arlington Northwest EAA regional fly-in a couple of weeks ago, and had a blast. The Lovely Wife was with me for the first time, and although I don’t think she was as enthusiastic as I was, she did say she had fun. The photo’s are in the new gallery. Note that I have picked out the best of a sad lot. I don’t think I’ll be doing a memory dump to the gallery.

You may also note that several of the shots have dust spots. This was due to my careless  lens swap in a dusty place. The sensor is still clean, but my lens got some big particles of dust on the glass that I didn’t see until I looked at the images. It’s an easy photoshop, but I’d rather just keep the lens clean.

In other, other news, I’m headed to Oshkosh on Sunday, for a fun filled week of airplanes, humidity, more airplanes and a bit of booth duty. My friends and ex-coworkers at Flight Simulator have graciously offered to foot the bill for my summer vacation. All I have to do is deify the good advice my mother gave me and talk to strangers. I’ll be spending four hours a day in hanger B helping the Flight Sim team run the hands on demos for the next version of Flight Simulator. Nothing new for me as I have done it in the past, what will be new is not doing it as a paid employee of Microsoft. I’ll have to train myself to say “Microsoft” instead of “we.”

The nifty part is that I’ll be going with some great folks from the FS community, some I’ve met, but most will be new. It should be a hoot.

I’ll try to get some entries in nightly once I’m at the show, but I don’t know what kind of connectivity the super 8 offers.
